Kayoko Kusumoto, born in 1954 in the former Kokubu City (now Kirishima City), Japan, is a master sculptor whose practice spans life-size and monumental figures, rendered with a profound spiritual resonance and formal elegance. After graduating from Kagoshima University in 1976, she studied under the celebrated sculptor Shinya Nakamura, whose influence is evident in the poised serenity and psychological depth of her work. Her sculptures, whether solitary or in groups are marked by meditative stillness, anatomical precision, and a quiet gravity that draws the viewer inward. Over the decades, Kusumoto has established herself as a leading figure in contemporary Japanese sculpture. Her work has been featured extensively in Japan’s foremost art platforms, including the Nitten, the nation’s premier fine art exhibition and the Hakujitsukai Exhibition, where she has become a regular and distinguished presence. Kusumoto is Professor Emeritus at Sojo University in Kumamoto, where she mentored generations of young artists. She currently serves as the Director of the Kagoshima City Museum of Art, continuing her commitment to the cultivation of public art and education. A member of both the Nitten Exhibition and the Japan Sculpture Society, she remains an active and influential presence in Japan’s cultural sphere. Her sculptures are objects of contemplation, vessels of presence, stillness, and inner light.
